Why do we fast?

Fasting is a Christian discipline to break the power of the flesh in our life. By sacrificing our wants, cravings, and desires, we are disciplining ourselves to break the worldly hold on our lives in order to be sustained by the Holy Spirit.

1.

We fast to strengthen our personal relationship with Jesus. The motivation for our fasting is to draw closer to the heart of God.

2.

Jesus fasted and prayed at the onset of His own ministry (Matthew 4:2), and His fast was followed with angelic visitation and Holy Spirit power.

3.

How is prayer different during fasting?

Fasting is empty without the main component of prayer. When we pray during a fast, we set aside our physical concerns and diligently seek the heart of God through life-changing prayer. Replace your regular mealtimes with times of prayer and meditating on God’s Word.

Fasting 101

HOW TO BEGIN

Start with a clear goal. Be specific. Why are you fasting? Do you need direction, healing, restoration of relationships or family issues? Are you facing financial difficulties? Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance. Pray daily and read the Bible.

DECIDE

Decide what to fast. Remember to replace the time you usually spend doing your fasted activity with prayer. Decide how long. It’s usually best to start slowly, most can easily fast from one to three days, but some go on as long as the full 21 days. Use wisdom and pray for guidance.

DURING

Fasting may cause mild discomfort such as hunger pains or headaches. Limit your activity and take time to rest. Spend time listening to praise and worship music. Get away from normal distractions as much as possible and keep your mind set on seeking God’s presence.

HOW TO END

When your fast is over, be careful to not overeat. Begin eating solid food gradually; eat small portions or snacks.

Each day we will have a different prayer topic.
